Dr. Robert D. Pascotto and The International Perfusion Association are organizing a series of philanthropic cardiac surgery trips to Santiago in the Dominican Republic. He and his team have operated on over 150 cardiac surgical patients since Sept. 2002. This cardiac surgical program was initiated to fulfill a void and need for cardiac surgery at Cabral Hospital in Santiago, Dominican Republic. This is a 520 bed public hospital that cares for indigent patients and serves a population greater than 3.2 million people. There is no cardiac surgery in the area. Without the mission the mostly young individuals we have treated with valvular heart disease would suffer poor quality and a short life expectancy. Cabral hospital has an affiliated medical school/residency program, this mission has also served by educating in the care and treatment of the cardiac surgical patient.
