The Institute for Responsible Technology (IRT) was founded in 2003 by Jeffrey Smith, a leading spokesperson on the risks of genetically modified (GM) foods, to promote the responsible use of technology and stop GM foods and crops through both grassroots and national strategies. The Institute receives donated funds through The Coordinating Council, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization based in Washington state.
