Description
The Hetrick-Martin Institute, Inc. (HMI) is the first and still the leading professional provider of comprehensive long-term academic and support programs for low-income at-risk LGBTQ and other at-risk youth age 12-21 in NYC. HMI grounds its work in the belief that all young people, regardless of sexual orientation or identity, deserve a safe and supportive environment in which to reach their full potential. HMI’s After School Department offers programs in Academic Enrichment; Arts and Culture; Health and Wellness; and Job Readiness & Career Exploration. Supportive Services include counseling/case management and referrals for legal, medical, mental health care and substance abuse treatment. Every day a hot meal is served and youth are offered clothing, showers, and laundry facilities. In FY06, HMI served 844 youth onsite, a 10% increase from the previous year and served over 1,500 youth offsite in recruitment and outreach at community events, schools, and youth conferences.
