Description
An inherited disorder, occurring in approximately 1 out of every 4,000 males, transferred genetically from mother to son. Spontanaeous mutation can also occur without privious family history. Hemophilia is a clotting factor deficiency, Factors VIII and IX, which causes uncontrolled bleeding into joints, organs, and tissues. Internal bleeding, without prompt and proper treatment can cause severe pain, joint damage, otheopedic problems and life threatening circumstances.
Hemophilia treatment is accessible and successful. Costs, however, can range between $100,000.00 to $500,000.00 annually. Delayed treatment can give rise to medical complications. Experiments in gene therapy are now beginning. This possible "cure" will greatly enhance the indviidual's quality of life.
