Description
Mission Statement: The Heart of America Indian Center incorporates traditional, cultural & spiritual values into the development & delivery of effective & professional support services for American Indians
in the greater Kansas City area.
History:
Founded in 1971, HAIC operates as the Kansas City area’s only multi-purpose social service agency for Native Americans. It has the distinction of being the oldest, continuously-operating Indian center (of 46 such urban organizations) in the nation. To help sustain their cultural & spiritual beliefs, local elders began a social club: The Council Fires of Greater Kansas City. Later this evolved into a formal, tax-exempt, 501-c-3 organization.
