Description
The mission of the Hawaii Nature Center is to “foster awareness, appreciation and understanding of the environment by and for the people of Hawaii, and to encourage wise stewardship of the islands in the future.” This mission translates into science-based, hands-on education experiences for elementary school children, island families and visitors. The HNC is consistently recognized as the lead organization in Hawaii dedicated to teaching island children about their unique environment.
Our programs focus on the three major ecosystems—forest and stream, wetland and coastline. From the earliest grade levels, our curriculum builds information about nature—from the gentle introduction to flora and fauna in kindergarten and first grade through the ahupua’a curriculum examining complex ecosystems and land management systems in intermediate school
