Description
Milwaukee Habitat is an affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International, and is an ecumenical Christian organization that builds homes for low-income families in Milwaukee's inner city. Milwaukee Habitat has been in operation since 1985, and will have built or rehabbed over 320 homes by the end of 2006.
Habitat homeowners contribute 500 "sweat equity" hours, helping build their homes and the houses of their Habitat neighbors. They are given a no-interest, 20 year loan on their homes, which are sold to them at well below market value. Homeowner payments are put into a revolving fund which is used to build more homes.
Milwaukee Habitat has the support of a number of area churches, foundations, corporations and individuals, who not only donate monetarily, but also give of their time and talents to help build the homes.
