... In partnership with families and volunteers, Lancaster Area Habitat for Humanity builds new houses and renovates or repairs older homes, then finances them at no profit, with a no-interest mortgage to participating low-income families in Lancaster County. Each family contributes 500 hours of “sweat equity” – time spent hard at work on their own homes or perhaps on a future neighbor’s home, painting, installing insulation, hanging drywall or landscaping.
To be eligible, families must complete an application, demonstrating financial and housing need, willingness to partner with Habitat, and capacity to repay the no-interest loan over time. Habitat prepares partner families for the benefits and responsibilities of home-ownership by providing volunteer mentors and hosting workshops on budgeting, mortgage and settlement, home maintenance, winterization, and simple repairs.
