The mission of The General Society of Mechanics and Tradesmen is to improve educational and cultural opportunities for working people in New York City.
Established in 1785 by 22 master craftsmen representing 30 skilled trades, The General Society of Mechanics and Tradesmen works diligently to improve the quality of life for New Yorkers through access to its charitable, educational and cultural programs: The General Society Library, Mechanics’ Institute, New York Center for Independent Publishing. After 222 years of active service of inestimable value to New York City, the organization’s aspirations can be summed up simply as continued service to the City, the State and Nation through provision of educational opportunities, sharing and furthering the history of skilled arts and trades, and promoting literary activities.
