Description
The Florida Association of Centers for Independent Living was established as a 501(c)(3) private, nonprofit organization in 1990. It serves as a networking, capacity building and advocacy organization for Florida's Centers for Independent Living (CILs).
Florida's 17 CILs are 501 (c)(3) private, nonprofit, non-residential agencies that assist persons with disabilities who wish to live independent, community based, self-directed, productive lives. They are part of a national network of “consumer controlled” CILs. Fifty-one percent of the staff and boards of all CILS are persons with disabilities.
The four core services provided by CILs are:
1. Information and referral
2. Independent Living Skills
3. Peer Mentoring and Networking
4. Advocacy
Each CIL also offers services specifically tailored to the needs of its community, including but not limited to: home modifications, equipment loans and repair, computer skills training, recreational activities, and community events.
