Description
Mentoring organization for at-risk children from some of Cincinnati's poorest and roughest communities. Friends provides intensive, comprehensive mentoring services to 75 school-age children from the first grade through high school. Paid professional adult mentors or Friends are assigned to the children to serve as role models: guide, teach, inspire, and nurture the youngsters. Long-term goals are graduation from high school or earning a GED, avoiding involvement in the criminal justice system, and avoiding teen parenthood. Friends of the Children is a chapter of the national organization by the same name, based in Portland, OR, and a program of Family Service of the Cincinnati area. Majority of funding comes from Hamilton County. Other support comes from fund-raising events, individuals.
