Dogs for Diabetics (D4D) is a 501(c) (3) non-profit corporation that provides high quality medical-alert service dogs to youth and adults who are Type I, insulin-dependent diabetics, through a program of training, placement and follow up services. D4D is a fully accredited member of Assistance Dogs International (ADI), which is an oversight body that sets standards and performance requirements for assistance dog organizations.
Medical-alert, service dogs for diabetics is a new and innovative service that is being recognized by the diabetic community and doctors around the world. The dogs are trained to identify the onset of hypoglycemia, a disabling condition which can cause confusion, disorientation, and weakness in minutes, and lead to coma and death in hours. See the March 2008 feature cover article from the American Diabetes Association magazine, Diabetes Forecast. D4D is the only fully-accredited service dog provider training dogs solely for this purpose.
