Democracy Matters Institute’s (DMI) mission is to strengthen United States democracy by creating a system of full public financing for election campaigns. Campus-based and nonpartisan, DMI works to achieve equality in the political arena by mobilizing students to correct the corrupting effects of our present private financing system. DMI coordinates programs and activities reaching approximately 21,000 young people on 72 college and high school campuses in 25 states. DMI’s organizational goals include: (a) building the capacity of young people to engage their peers in the educational and organizing work necessary to achieve publicly financed election campaigns; (b) cultivating a new generation of leaders dedicated to lifelong civic engagement; (c) instilling in young people a passion for creating a just and fair democracy; and, (d) further developing an outcomes measurement system to effectively gauge participant progress and the success of DMI programming and activities.
