The Community Land Cooperative of Cincinnati is a non-profit organization whose mission is “to empower families with low & medium incomes to own homes in the West End and neighboring communities, with the Community Land Co-op retaining land ownership to perpetuate affordable housing.”
The Community Land Co-op was founded in 1980 when land and housing speculation was forcing many long-term residents of the community from their homes. The first home was purchased and rehabbed for this family and, seeking to balance the needs of the individual with the needs of the community, was preserved as perpetually affordable.
As one of the oldest community land trusts in the United States and the first in Ohio, the Community Land Co-op retains ownership of the land while selling the homes on that land to low and medium income families. The family builds up equity in their home as they pay off their mortgage to the Community Land Co-op.
