Communities In Schools of the Charleston Area, Inc. (CIS) is a nationally accredited nonprofit dropout prevention/stay-in-school program currently serving more than 7,400 students and their families. The purpose of CIS is to work within the schools to provide student programs and services that improve lives and reduce the high school dropout rate. CIS is the only organization that works full time inside 18 low-achieving schools in Charleston and Berkeley Counties. Recognizing that a student’s ability to succeed academically often depends on factors outside of the classroom, CIS wraps a blanket of community services around the child and his or her family. Basic human needs, such as food, shelter, clothing, and counseling are among the most frequent requests. Our mission is to surround students with a community of support, empowering them to stay in school and achieve in life.
