Citymeals on Wheels

Gael Greene and James Beard founded Citymeals-on-Wheels in 1981 by raising private funds to supplement the government-funded weekday meal delivery program. Citymeals now funds 102 community-based agencies that bring weekend, holiday, emergency and weekday meals to homebound elderly New Yorkers who can no longer shop or cook for themselves. In addition to funding weekend, holiday and emergency meals, Citymeals currently underwrites weekday meals for 1,800 homebound elderly who were formerly on waiting lists for home-delivered meals. With 14% of our meal recipients most at risk for malnutrition, Citymeals also now serves a supper meal to over 1,400 of the poorest frailest and most isolated.
