The Healthy Heart Initiative
BCF is targeting rheumatic heart disease (RHD) as its first disease area to support access to low cost diagnostics and development of community prevention programs. RHD remains a significant cause of heart disease in the developing world today. The most devastating effects are on children and young adults in their most productive years. An estimated 12 million people are affected by rheumatic fever and rheumatic heart disease of which two-thirds are children. Of the estimated 12 million with RF/RHD, at least 3 million have congestive heart failure (CHF) that required hospitalization. A large number of persons with CHF resulting from RHD require expensive cardiac valve replacement surgery. If surgery is not available or affordable, the quality of life is extremely poor and many will not live a full and happy life.
