Stops child abuse/neglect before it starts. Only place in the San Francisco Bay Area where parents who temporarily can't cope can voluntarily place their children for short-term residential care. Children 0-11 stay overnight up to 30 days in warm, caring, homelike setting. Food, clothing, loving care provided. All services free and confidential. Parents develop an action plan to resolve the crisis/alleviate the stress. They receive case management, resources and individualized referrals to other agencies . No geographic/income limitations. No government funding is used. Over 18,000 admissions since 1981. A single mother with two children needed immediate surgery but had no one to care for her children. The hospital social worker referred her to the Crisis Nursery - her children were admitted and cared for while she was in the hospital. When she came to pick them up she was still in need of recuperation. The children stayed another week while their mother fully recovered.
