Description
BALAM Dance Theatre, a unique chamber-sized dance ensemble, brings a cutting-edge vision of contemporary world dance inspired by Balinese theatre to audiences of all ages and backgrounds. The New York City-based dance company, a non-profit, tax-exempt organization, features 6 dancers and Balinese guest artists.
The company was established in 1979 and originally named the Balinese American Dance Theatre Ltd. Founder Islene Pinder, a City University of New York dance educator, and artistic director/choreographer Carlos Fittante, shape BALAM’s repertoire. Each work emanates from the dancers’ individual movement skills (Ballet, Baroque, Lester Horton, Karate, and Ballroom) fused with Balinese dance.
BALAM has been featured at Lincoln Center Out-of-Doors, LA MAMA, Jacob's Pillow Dance Festival, the Bali Arts Festival, and the 2nd Encuentro Internacíonal de Danza Contemporánea in Mexico.
