For 21 years, the Aurora Health Care Midwifery and Wellness Center (AMWC), the largest midwifery group in Wisconsin, has provided access to high quality, patient-centered obstetrical/gynecological care in Milwaukee. The 19 AMWC caregivers serve approximately 1000 women annually and more than 80% of these patients, predominantly African American women, live in the Milwaukee zip codes with infant mortality rates that are among the highest in the nation.

Using a collaborative care model that emphasizes prevention, the provider-patient relationship and patient empowerment, exemplary outcomes are achieved in a cost-effective manner. AMWC has creatively expanded operational reach into the emergency department and community settings—school, FQHC and grocery store clinics. The Nurse-Midwives are also actively engaged in the education of healthcare professionals.
