Description
Atai Orphanage is a non-profit organization dedicated to providing food, clothing, education and permanent homes to the many suffering orphans of Teso District, a dirt-poor rural community located deep in the interior of northern Uganda. Although Teso is the second largest district in the country, its distance from major urban centers severely limits access to vital health services and other facilities. Over the past two decades, Teso has been hard-hit by HIV/AIDS and warfare; the result has been a surging population of orphans in desperate need. UNAIDS has estimated that more than 880,000 Ugandan children below the age of 14 have been orphaned as a direct result of the AIDS virus, a figure which makes up more than half of the orphans in the country.
