Art21 was founded in 1997 with the mission to increase knowledge of contemporary art, ignite discussion, and inspire creative thinking by using diverse media to present contemporary artists at work and in their own words.
Major Art21 Initiatives:
--Produce "Art:21–Art in the Twenty-First Century", the only series on national public television to focus exclusively on contemporary art
--Encourage the integration of contemporary art into a variety of educational contexts by providing innovative materials and support for educators
--Create a rich archive of film and video footage documenting art and artists in the twenty-first century
