The Arc of Pennsylvania works to include all children and adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities in every community. It focuses on systems advocacy and governmental affairs. It was founded in 1949 and is affiliated with The Arc of the United States and 36 local chapters of The Arc covering 52 counties across Pennsylvania. We promote active citizenship and inclusion in every community.
The accomplishments of The Arc of PA include the PARC Consent Decree, which resulted in the first-ever right to a free and public education for children with mental retardation. In addition, The Arc of PA was a significant contributor to the movement to close state institutions and support people with disabilities in their own communities. The Arc of PA supports community-based supports and services, inclusive education, funding to end waiting lists for services, and stronger laws to protect people vulnerable to abuse.
