Description
The local branch of The Arc was started in 1957 by a group of volunteers concerned with the lack of programs for children with intellectual and/or developmental disabilities. Today, it is a professional organization with 501(c) 3 status and a paid staff that effectively works for the mission of empowering individuals with intellectual/developmental disabilities. The Arc achieves its mission by helping clients and families realize their highest potential through advocacy, education, programming and family support. The Arc’s clients have all been diagnosed as either having mild, moderate or profound Intellectual and/or Developmental Disabilities. The majority of clients suffer from either Down Syndrome, Autism, Prader-Willie Syndrome, and/or another Chromosome Disorder.
