Description
African Voices Communications is a non-profit organization founded in 1992 dedicated to fostering cultural understanding and awareness through literature and the arts. . The organization's public programs are: African Voices Magazine, a quarterly magazine devoted to publishing emerging writers and visual artists of color; Cultural Circle Conference, a resource for writers to learn about career opportunities; Reel Sisters of the Diaspora Film Fesitval & Lecture Series, a festival for women filmmakers produced in collaboration with Long Island University, Brooklyn Campus; and Get Your Read On! (GYRO!), a family literacy campaign to empower young people by encouraging them to develop an interest in reading and writing. GYRO! is part of African Voices’ Art for Kids program. GYRO! provides reading clubs to students in public schools and city wide events that engage parents and children in storytelling and reading activities.
