Description
Established in 2000, and based in Washington DC, Action Africa assists children and families in Africa in the areas of health, education, and economic generativity. Africans abroad and friends of Africa team up with local volunteers and community leaders in rural Africa to implement these program services. A current 5-year agenda includes putting and sustaining one million at-risk children into the school system in Africa by the end of 2012, using the organization's "Surround-a-child" sponsorship program method. Currently the organization has activities in Nigeria and Sierra Leone (where hundreds of children and thousands of villagers are served regularly). Most of the beneficiaries are orphans and/or refugees. These programs are planned to expand into other regions.
