Access Housing, Inc. (DC) is a nonprofit 501c3, community-based organization committed and dedicated to the principle that everyone, regardless of income or socioeconomic status, has a right to decent, safe and affordable housing. The program was the first of its kind in the greater DC metro area. The organization operates two facilities which provide safe housing to nearly 100 homeless veterans, both men and women at a given time. Access Housing, which works in partnership with the Department of Veterans Affairs, operates the Southeast Veterans Service Center and the Chesapeake Veterans House. These homes provide a safe place where homeless veterans have their own rooms, full meal service, a variety of counseling services (housing, job, mental heath and substance abuse, as needed), and more. The ultimate goal of the program is to help place veterans in permanent housing. Veterans from across the Washington, DC metro area reside at the center. The wait list for veterans seeking to obtain a home at the center is extensive.
