Fields of Dreams is helping to revive interest in baseball in innercity Washington, DC, and strengthen the life skills and increase the self-esteem of children in some of the most underserved neighborhoods in DC. Since 2002, the program has served over 1,000 students. We operate an after school program that combines academic enrichment, values education and baseball instruction around Jackie Robinson’s values. At each of the six elementary schools, Fields of Dreams serves 20 boys and girls with a DCPS teacher and a baseball coach working as a team both in the classroom and on the field. Fields of Dreams has also expanded the program to follow students as they move into middle school and added an in-school mentoring piece. Each summer we operate a free 6-week summer camp for 100 students that combines 3 hours of academics (to address summer learning loss), 3 hours of baseball skills and some free play time as well as 2 free meals.
