There is no excuse to drive under the influence or while intoxicated. Education has reached the masses, and it's time for the punishment to fit the crime. Clearly an individual who has had too much to drink is incapable of discerning what is wise, prudent and just for their fellow citizens with whom they will share the road.
DUI/DWI laws vary from state to state, and while there is no changing that aspect to applicable law, concerned citizens should unite to show solidarity against one of the most foolish and avoidable crimes that is committed on a daily basis.
The penalties against drunken driving are "potentially" harsh if something bad is to happen. They are harsh for repeat offenders. How about being harsh for first-time offenders who stand to learn the greatest lesson from a punishment for an absolutely absurd crime?
The Petition
Dear State Legislators:
After years of education, and millions of dollars spent on advertisements to discourage driving while under the influence of alcohol or illegal substances, the message has been received. It is time to call for accountability among all citizens of The United States, from state to state, with harsh penalties for even a first time DUI offense.
There is no excuse for driving under the influence. Of 1,000,000 stories, perhaps there is 1 in which someone could possibly justify the need to get behind the wheel. Even in that example, relying on emergency services for assistance would be the choice based on available knowledge and personal wisdom. This is precisely why we pay state and local taxes. Therefore, driving under the influence should never an option--just as the law states.
The penalties for repeat offenders and criminal offenders in terms of manslaughter are clearly well enforced, and have removed many individuals from the road; however, by enacting new "zero tolerance" laws throughout our 50 states, we could further deter individuals from "tempting fate," and getting behind the wheel after even a couple of drinks.
It is time for the citizens of America to accept responsibility, as well as self-accountability. Please consider upping the proverbial ante in cases of DUI guilt. This is a crime that simply should not be committed.
Sincerely,
Citizens of all 50 states
