Icebreaker clothing took a while to catch on, who wants to wear wool in the summer? But it was discovered in 1994 that it was a wonderful lightweight material and also a warm material for the coldest part of winter. Thus, Icebreaker became a household name.
Icebreaker clothing took a while to catch on but when it did, a whole new line of clothing for the entire family came into being. A tee shirt was the first prototype made of Merino wool. “It was soft, sensual, looked lustrous and was totally natural”. It was nothing like regular wool which was heavy and scratchy. You could even throw this in the washer. Then Sir Peter Blake, a Kiwi Yachting hero, wore a prototype icebreaker top and leggings for 40 days and nights for a record setting circumnavigation record. This is how the brand ICEBREAKER was born in 1994. The Merino Sheep lives in the high country in New Zealand , lives in extreme cold and warm temperatures, but stays cool in 95 degree f weather and -4 degree winter weather.
