Climate change deniers aren’t skeptics in the usual sense of the word. Skeptics demand proof and analyze scientific methods to find skewed results. Climate change deniers, however, rarely have scientific facts backing their arguments. Instead, they just create fantasies explaining how humans are not having a significant effect on the planet’s climate.
Recently, ExxonMobil was linked to 9 out of 10 studies that denied the existence or importance of climate change. As the world’s largest oil company, it is obvious that ExxonMobil stands to profit by spreading misinformation related to this pressing concern.
Demand that ExxonMobil explain these connections. If they have paid scientists and other so-called researchers to publish misinformation, then the public needs to know about these activities immediately because they are a betrayal to the entire human species.
The Petition
ExxonMobil,
As the world’s largest oil company, you stand to make a lot of money by denying that global climate change is occurring. Although individuals working for your company are entitled to interpret facts as they see fit, information has surfaced suggesting that ExxonMobil could have a hand in spreading massive amounts of misinformation about the environment.
We believe that such a ruse is equal to betraying the entire human race.
Recently, Carbon Brief released information showing that 9 out of 10 articles denying the existence of climate change were in some way connected to ExxonMobil. This seems like an incredibly high number, and we doubt that it is a coincidence.
Those of us concerned about the planet and the future of humans on it, however, want to know the truth. We would, therefore, like you to explain these connections. If anyone within your company has been paying scientists and so-called researchers to produce misleading reports, then we want to know right now. Investigative reporters will certainly uncover any secrets. This is your chance to come clean and explain any wrongdoing.
Although we do not presume your company’s guilt, we suspect that misdeeds have been committed.
We turn to you for an explanation.
Sincerely,
Georgia Kaufman
