While the U.S. economy struggles back to its feet, oil companies benefit from massive tax breaks that help them generate millions upon millions of dollars in profit. Oil companies claim that ending tax breaks would force them to hire fewer people and explore fewer areas for fossil fuels. The reality, though, is that these companies are making more money than they already deserve and they need to contribute their fair share to society.
Experts believe that ending big oil tax breaks wouldn’t have a significant impact on prices at the pump. Oil prices, instead, are predominately based on worldwide supply and demand. Escalating demand in China and India, therefore, will have a much greater impact than tax subsidies from the U.S.
Tell big oil companies that they have enough money and don’t deserve a free ride anymore!
The Petition
Congress,
American taxpayers are facing tough choices every day. Not only do we need to find ways to afford our homes, food, and clothing during these difficult times, but we also need to assume that the cost of gasoline will continue to rise well above the current $4 per gallon.
Yet as we fear tax cuts that put public education, national security, and union rights in jeopardy, we see that big oil companies, such Shell Oil, EcconMobil, ConocoPhillips, BP America, and Chevron, benefit from massive tax breaks.
If the oil industry were struggling, we would understand the need for assistance. Oil companies, however, generate massive amounts of profit each year. In fact, each year brings a higher level of profit than the one before.
Something seems very wrong with this situation. We support these companies when we purchase their products. We don’t need to support them with our tax dollars as well.
Oil companies claim that they need subsidies to continue exploring new energy options and hiring new workers. Isn’t the profit potential enough for these companies? Why do they require assistance from U.S. taxpayers who then have to face rising prices at the pump?
Let’s end tax subsidies for big oil now so that we can address some of the real issues that lead to economic disparity in our country.
Thank you,
U.S. Tax Payers
