With numerous states still putting criminals to death, it is time for the federal government to step in. No government has the right to take the life of one of its citizens. The problem of corporal punishment becomes even more obvious when one recognizes that dozens of former convicts on death row have been exonerated of their crimes because new technologies have shown that they are innocent.
When a government kills an innocent person, it is murder regardless of whether it was done with the court’s approval. American citizens can no longer stand by while certain states continue to use this barbaric approach to criminal justice. It provides justice for no one and stains the souls of every taxpayer who contributes to the death of other human beings.
The Petition
Congress,
In recent years, more than a dozen death row inmates have been exonerated of their crimes because DNA technology has revealed that they are innocent. These are people who could have easily been put to death at any day were it not for evidence showing that they were innocent of their crimes.
No matter how certain a jury is, it can never know with complete accuracy whether someone did or did not commit a crime. When innocent people are sent to jail, they get to continue fighting for their innocence. When they are put to death, though, they have no recourse.
Certain states in our country continue to use this barbaric, ineffective form of criminal justice. It is time for the federal government to take a stand. The death penalty has no place in a justice system because it offers no justice. Instead, it creates a situation where taxpayers might find that they have funded the murder of innocent American citizens.
This is something that must stop now before another innocent person dies at the hands of a state government.
Sincerely,
Mike Gibraltar
