About Baseball Prospectus Online Deals

In 1996, Gary Huckabay, along with Clay Davenport, Rany Jazayeli, Christina Kahrl, and Joe Sheehan, who were recruited as contributors, published the first edition of Baseball Prospectus Online. To say the least, this was "raw copy" at its rawest. It was produced on a copying machine, and offered statistics on AL and NL baseball teams, with the exception of the St. Louis Cardinals, who were accidentally left out. From this very inauspicious beginning, however, came what is today one of the most in-depth and complete statistics guides available.

Baseball Prospectus Online has many uses. You may be forming a "fantasy" league; with the statistics compiled and available in one publication, you can be assured of building one of the best. Or you may simply be one of those people who enjoys keeping up with the statistics of your favorite team or even the entire league. Baseball Prospectus Online provides all this information and more.

Baseball statistics such as EqA (equivalent average), the Davenport Translations (exactly what they sound, Clay Davenport's translations of different areas of a team's performance) and VORP (Value Over Replacement Player--according to Baseball Prospectus Online, this means "The number of runs contributed beyond what a replacement-level player at the same position would contribute if given the same percentage of team plate appearances. VORP scores do not consider the quality of a player's defense."
