Companies Doing Good

Welcome to our new "Companies Doing Good" page where we feature companies that are helping to make the world a better place.

Loews Hotels and Modest Needs

Based on the belief that businesses have a responsibility to support the communities where they operate, in 1990 Jonathan Tisch, Chairman and CEO of Loews Hotels created the company’s Good Neighbor Policy, the first of its kind in the travel industry. Since then, the Loews Hotels has set the standard for corporate philanthropy, receiving many accolades over the years including the President’s Service Award, the highest honor given by the President of the United States for community service directed at solving critical social problems.

Loews Hotels Good Neighbor Policy addresses various issues of social concern and the company’s 18 properties conduct specific activities, including:

  • Donating excess food to local food banks, shelters, and hunger relief programs.
  • Supporting local literacy programs by providing space for classes to be held and volunteer instructors from the hotels.
  • Donating used goods such as linens and furniture to local organizations and shelters.
  • Encouraging volunteer activities for hotel employees.
  • Implementing energy saving equipment in new hotels and in existing properties as they are renovated.

In its latest commitment to the policy, Loews Hotels recently created a partnership with the Modest Needs Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to helping hard-working individuals and families who find themselves faced with unexpected emergency expenses that have the potential to be catastrophic. Modest Needs’ maximum grant is $1,000.00. Rather than disburse their grants cash to individuals, Modest Needs makes its grants by remitting payment directly to a creditor on a successful applicant’s behalf. Founded by Dr. Keith P. Taylor as a “living tribute to human kindness,” this year the Modest Needs Foundation celebrates its 5th anniversary and millionth dollar donated.

Throughout the year, Loews Hotels will embark on a variety of local and national activities to bring awareness to and raise funds for Modest Needs Foundation. In addition, special "funded by Loews" icons will appear at www.modestneeds.org to denote when a Loews Hotel has made a contribution and funded an applicant. All of us at Loews Hotels hope that you will join us in supporting Modest Needs. Together, we can make a world of difference.
